Celebrating 70 years of Listed buildings

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947.
The law effectively represented the start of the Listed building system we have today. To date, the list features 400,000 entries – including palaces, piers, windmills and bridges.
To celebrate the anniversary five more additions have been announced. They are a London cabbie’s shelter, a First World War wireless station, a ‘hobbit house’ in Yorkshire, a home in the Cornish woods and a Jewish Cemetery.
All were listed by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) on the advice of Historic England.
Listing is important as it helps preserve the special fabric of our land, buildings and places – essentially the heritage of our nation. It means they can be protected for posterity and for future generations to enjoy.
As Building Surveyors – with fully qualified RICS Members and Fellows among our expert team at McAndrew Martin – we possess the rigorous knowledge, skills and understanding required to help safeguard such heritage for many years to come.
Environmental wear and tear, tourism, pollution, maintenance, structural diagnosis and repair are among the challenges to consider for inspections and conservation work on Listed buildings.
Our Building Conservation and Surveying expertise has been used on many historic and important properties nationwide, including many famous landmarks you will see in London from Horse Guards Parade to the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.
